Bornholm is the ideal place for a cycling holiday and there are many advantages in choosing to explore the island by bicycle. To begin with, there are many beautiful car-free cycling tracks all over the island meandering along the coast and through the woods. And, of course, being Denmark bicycles remain a priority with safe cycling lanes along the main roads.
Book Bornholm provides a good overview of the cycling network. There are also some great apps for planning outings either suggesting a gentle, scenic itinerary or an athletic adventure in the hilly parts of the island.
Most cycling enthusiasts start their cycling holiday from their home town opting for special rates combining train & ferry with bike or bus & ferry with bike to get to Bornholm. Others leave the car at the long-term parking of their departure port (Koge in Denmark, Sassnitz in Germany or Ystad in Sweden) and board the ferry with their bikes.
There is also the option of purchasing a good quality bicycle car rack so that you can come with your beloved bikes. In this case, be sure to harness the bikes securely. The police are always on the lookout for slack attached bikes which become a hazard on the roads.
Bornholm is surprisingly hilly and windy, a combination that will slow down even the fittest cyclist. For this reason electric bikes have become very popular not only on Bornholm but all over Denmark.
The Danish authorities are keen to remind visitors of the cycling rules that apply to make cycling both enjoyable and safe. This short video provides a good reminder of the basic rules.
A bicycle helmet is highly recommended when riding an electric bike. We have two approved helmets that the guests can borrow during their stay with us.
Remember that you can take your bicycle on the local buses or call the Bornholm minibus service if needed.

We have two ordinary bicycles which the guests can borrow depending on availability. The man’s bike is a traditional Danish bike and the lady’s bike, the better one, is the one I used when I lived in Alsace, France. See pictures below.
If you want to rent a bike and need special accessories, we recommend Bornholms Cykeludlejning. They are close to the port, just behind Destination Bornholm, the tourism information centre, and opposite the shopping centre. It is where people pick up their bikes as they come off the ferry. You can book your bike online: highly recommended in the high season. You can also leave any excess luggage there while you tour around the island.
For repairs, we use the bicycle shop in Aakirkeby. They do a first class service and will even pick up your faulty bike and bring it back when it is repaired.
Behind the guesthouse, and out of view from the road, there is a barn where we keep the bicycles. It has a charging station for electric bikes, a manual bicycle pump and a few tools for basic repairs (mainly punctures).
From the barn there is a direct access into the guesthouse.
