The Elm Tree was widespread across the northern hemisphere making up many natural forests and woods until it was decimated by the Dutch elm disease during the 20th century. The Elm Tree has always been appreciated for its quick growth attaining great heights to proudly display an impressive profile. Not only does it grow quickly, but it can also be used as a tutor for other plants. The Romans planted elm trees in the vineyards to support the vines and in some regions of Italy the practice is still in use.
The Elm tree is very present in poetry. In epic poetry, such as the Iliad, elms grow on the tombs of the fallen heroes lamenting their loss and the devastation of wars. In pastoral poetry the elm symbolises the idyllic life, providing the shade and shelter, the elegance and majesty conducive to transformation and conversions of the heart. Due to their quick growth, elm trees have been planted to celebrate victories. Liberty trees or arbres de la liberté were planted in France along the main roads to symbolise the revolutionary hopes. In many places, the departmental roads are still bordered with trees, the elms having long been replaced with poplars or planes. Planted in rows in parcs to create elegant literary walks, majestic elm trees are also a recurrent theme in landscape paintings of the romantic era.

Fear not the fierceness of the revolution about to sweep you away: it supports the conversion of the heart, the dissolution of any lingering sense of separation and the reconnection to the vine so that we may be blessed by the fruits of the Spirit and become instruments of peace and harmony.
